What makes a beautiful photo?
What makes a photo truly beautiful? It’s not just the subject, be it a person or a landscape or still life or any multitude of subjects.
When you book a professional boudoir experience with me, you’re investing in more than just a camera click — you’re trusting someone with the experience and intuition to bring out your very best, to see the art and beauty within you
1) What brings a thing to life is the artists eye.
A beautiful photo begins with a vision, a desire to tell a story or capture a moment. The way a photographer composes a shot — the placement of the body, the angle of the frame, the lines and flow of the image — all matter. A trained eye knows how to use composition and background choice to flatter, to direct the observer’s attention and lead them on a journey. It’s not luck — it’s expertise.
There is no right or wrong answer here but what do you see in this photo, what’s the story? What do you think is happening? What does it tell you about the person? What’s being said and what’s not being said?
2) Lighting, lighting, lighting - lighting is everything in photography. It doesn’t matter the source as long as the photographer knows how to use it to tell the story. To push or pull your eye. There is psychology at play here, the human gaze is drawn to bright things, then colorful things, then in focus things and it fills in the blanks where shadows and darkness live. This is a photo with little brightness and a whole lot of shadow, what does it say?
3) Beauty Isn’t Just Seen, It’s Felt - A beautiful photo isn’t about being technically perfect, a well taken shot of a spoon can be technically perfect but doesn’t show emotion or elicit an emotional response. (Unless you really like spoons!) It’s about connection, emotion, and artistry. When you trust a professional, me, you’re giving yourself the gift of being seen through a lens that sees you — and brings your beauty to life with intention. What is she feeling right a the moment of capture? What did she feel afterwards?
4) Ethical editing - This is where everything comes together, the lighting, the poses, the angles, the vision. Most importantly though, showing you as you. I don’t change your shape, I don’t remove your scars, your stretch marks, your bumps and rolls. They are a part of your story. As one of my clients said, “my scars are the path on the map of my life, they got me here today”. By ethical I mean not changing you, not misrepresenting you, not altering you into what society says you should be. I do minor skin smoothing and temporary blemish removal; neither a bruise nor a cut define you.
